Dorinda, her writing and her favourite places

ABOUT

From an early age, Dorinda has loved writing stories. One of her prized possessions is a book she won in a story competition organised by a national tea company in the 1960s. After taking early retirement from the Civil Service she grabbed the chance to begin writing again, studying for a degree at the University of Hull, England. In 2012 she graduated with a BA in Creative Writing.

An avid reader since childhood, she is never happier than when surrounded with books. She volunteers at her local community library and enjoys helping customers find just the right book.

She loves travel. Or, rather, she loves visiting new places in England and abroad. She doesn’t much enjoy the hassle of getting there! Her favourite places in Europe are Italy and Menorca. Dorinda enjoys her weekly Italian lessons in a friendly, local group. She also finds pleasure in visiting historic places around Yorkshire, pottering in her greenhouse, walking with her cocker spaniel dog, especially on the beach in winter, and swimming.

Dorinda was Chair of Scarborough Writers’ Circle from 2015 to 2021.

Some of her short stories have been accepted and published in People’s Friend Magazine, My Weekly Magazine and The Weekly News.

Other stories have  been published in anthologies: Illumination, Making Waves and The Plotting Shed.

In 2018 Dorinda won the annual Ryedale Family History Society short story competition with her story, Fire Storm, about the Baedeker air raid on York in 1942.

News! On 2nd August 2022 I submitted my portfolio of short stories for my MA in creative writing. What a fantastic experience the online MA at Hull University has been. All being well, that, together with family bereavements, explains  my three year absence from my website. More details and ramblings on my blog!
